Bicycles Against Poverty is a student led initiative at Bucknell University and a registered community based organization in the northern district of Uganda. BAP seeks to provide sustainable transportation and appropriate technology to the communities of Africa through micro-credit schemes. The pilot project is set in a northern region of Uganda where people have to travel many miles to access social facilities such as hospitals and markets.
The Future is in our hands
The future has always been in our hands, it’s up to us to decide what to do with the world. We can decide to change it for the better or the worse. BAP has decided to make a positive change in the world and if you want to help us make the world a better place, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO JOIN. You can help us change the world for the better through your support for our projects. You can help financially or by donating materials needed for certain projects. Do not forget, help can also be through your ideas and advise. Remember to make the world the place you want it to be.
Vision
The broader vision is to adapt the Bicycles Against Poverty project to wherever it is needed. We believe in a broad vision to encourage creative solutions to the same general problems that the under privileged have always faced. Our vision is to eradicate poverty in all forms, and all our projects are specifically aimed at achieving this goal through sustainable developmental projects. It has long been accepted that Aid is good, but BAP focuses on providing this Aid in such a way that causes visible change in the lives of community members and provides them with the tools to help themselves.
Structure
Bicycles Against Poverty has a two tier structure at Bucknell University. The first tier consists of an executive committee composed of students who have been very involved with BAP over the past year. The executive committee meets at least once every two weeks and more frequently before major events. Each member of the executive committee has specific objectives or focus area.
Committees make up the second tier of BAP at Bucknell. Currently there are three committees; Operations, Development, and Communications. The Operations committee is responsible for planning and running events on campus. Development works on securing grants and writing reports. The Communications committee promotes awareness about events and BAP’s objectives on and off campus.
Beyond Bucknell
Bicycles Against Poverty is also in the process of expanding beyond Bucknell. BAP is looking to open several new chapters at college campuses in the North East. (We are also looking into a partneship with an elementary school in New Jersey. With this venture we hope to instill younger generations with an interest in service learning. )In the future we envision a network of chapters collaborating and working together to reach our overarching goals. These chapters would be overseen by a Board of Directors.
If you are interested in starting a chapter please contact us.
NGO
Members of the BAP organization have been thinking about expanding their efforts to include help for educational endeavors and becoming an independent non-profit organization. While it is not yet operational, a separate entity known as ROTU (Reaching Out to the Underprivileged) was incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania in the fall of 2009. Eventually ROTU will seek federal 501 C3 tax exempt status and may become an umbrella organization under which BAP will join other outreach efforts to help those less fortunate.
